There are so many awesome things about the season of autumn! For as long as I can remember, I have loved this season the best. It might be because my birthday often falls on the first day of this lovely season.

However, September 22nd ends up being the last day of summer instead. Either way, it is fitting that I was born on this day, as I do not like hot weather — and it certainly doesn’t like me!

Fall is wonderful for all of the senses. The tastes of caramel apples, apple cider, maple syrup and the flavors and scents of fragrant cinnamon, pumpkin spice and pecan pie are delish!

Cooler temperatures (north of Texas that is) and the softness of a favorite sweater or sweatshirt. The sounds of crowds at a football game or fall festival fill the air.

The beauty of brilliant yellow, orange and red leaves in spectacular displays of colorful foliage are some of autumn’s best features.

When creating a cozy space with the beauty of fall into your home, why not consider all of these? Create a space that brings all of these together with these 15 fall ideas.

Decorating for fall does not have to cost a small fortune.

For all of my fellow deal seekers on a budget, finding bargains can allow for decorating more of your space, or rather, more spaces.

Consider the popular farmhouse style. Who knew the “dollar section” at Target has items within this decorating style?

Add to what you have to complement existing accessories with similar items.

Add to the items to transform them into the style you want. This can be an opportunity to subtly add some bold style. Take some risks!

I have narrowed down to a list of 15 of my favorite things to decorate with for fall.

fall ideasBurlap

This fabric works well with farmhouse, country, shabby chic, rustic and many other styles. It can be incorporated successfully into virtually any holiday design.

I love this fabric because it can be casual or more dressy, it’s strong, and can be found in multiple colors as ribbon. This is an ideal fabric for fall because of its neutral color and durability.

It can be transformed into fabulous shapes and styles without sewing. It’s pretty easy to work with too.

Consider it for garland, pumpkins, upholstery, pillows, curtain swags and in wreaths. Look for some with fun patterns on it like chevron or polka dots.

Burlap appears to be here to stay!

fall ideasSunflowers

These are a lovely flower to transition from summer into fall.

They can be purchased in yellow, orange, red, white and other fall color shades.

Scarecrows

I have never been one to favor the scary costumes and yard displays that are prevalent this time of year.

Scarecrows are about as close to that as my style will get.

Many sizes of these characters can be found to buy. Some are quite cute.

fall ideasWooden Items

There are so many options here.

Some of my favorite wooden items to use include trays, wood slices, leaves, baskets and boxes.

Wooden candlesticks and photo frames work wonderfully in arrangements as well.

Various Nuts

Fall is the perfect time to start displaying nuts for treats. Pecans, walnuts and hazelnuts add to the cozy charm of fall flair.

Even acorns can be fun for the younger ones to collect and display alone, or added to wreaths, swags and floral arrangements. These items make great filler for clear glass vases.

fall ideasBaskets

These are obviously popular for year-round use.

But, they certainly look awesome in different materials, sizes and colors at this time of year.

Tobacco baskets are quite popular now as part of the farmhouse look.

Paint them or grab a hot glue gun and embellish with magnolia or cotton stems.

Wicker, wood, fabric, rattan, ceramic, plastic or straw in various shapes and shades of stain or paint colors, are easily found. Whether round, rectangular, hanging, handled or not, baskets are consistently functional and stylish!

fall ideasOutdoor Photographs

Another favorite include photos of family or of fall landscapes, flowers or pumpkins.

This is also a perfect opportunity to showcase fall art created by you or a family member.

This makes your display truly unique and special.

I have a favorite photograph of my daughter sitting on a hay bale surrounded by pumpkins. I bring it out as part of my arrangements at the beginning of my autumn decorating activities each year.

fall ideasPumpkins

They can be found in so many interesting and creative materials and colors.

Adorable pumpkins in wood, ceramic, fabric, metal, twine and yarn are easily found to purchase.

For the creative, make your own out of these.

Bling

Bling, sparkle and shine added to décor this time of year — it’s just plain fun.

Adding the unexpected and some whimsy to your otherwise predictable fall decorations just makes for more fall enjoyment! For those who love glitter, rhinestones, colored glass mini tiles or other bling, it’s easy to incorporate this by embellishing with hot glue or even layering.

fall ideasPatterns

Leopard print, buffalo prints, plaid and polka dots are all patterns that I love to incorporate into fall decorating! The more unexpected, the better.

Using neutral or fall foliage colors in your favorite patterns is a fun way to personalize your decorating.

Patterns can be incorporated through choices in fabric, ribbons, pillows or paint.

Painting real pumpkins or sewing them from a fabric designed in a favorite pattern remains a fun and popular activity.

fall ideasTiered Trays

For some reason, I can’t seem to quickly walk by these in stores.

They always stop me in my tracks because they can be decorated in so many ways!

And they can be found in so many materials. These can include wood, various metals, wire, ceramic and even mirrors.

They work well as display stands for holiday décor, favorite fruits and also as coffee stations and planter stands.

They can be found in two, three or more levels.

fall ideasFall Scents, Flavors and Treats

Think tea bags, mini bags of ground coffee, cinnamon-scented pine cones and cinnamon sticks, caramel apples or candies of this flavor.

Scented Candles, sprays and lotions can all be part of the displays.

These are all enjoyable ways to welcome you and your family home from a tiring day too.

Swags and Garland

Speaking of these, creating one or more for fall offers an easy way to dress up a front door, porch, stair rail or fireplace mantle. Hanging them on walls, chandeliers or sconces are also popular choices.

Headboards and footboards are some favorite places for me to add garland. They also make a lovely addition to the tops of armoires and china hutches.

fall ideasA “Welcome to Fall” Sign

Ideally, this would go on the porch, front door or just inside your home’s entrance.

This cheerful greeting to your guests will make them smile from the moment they arrive at your home.

I personally, like the ones that include the words “pumpkin spice.”

Metal

This strong and substantial material anchors the autumn décor nicely. It helps to break up the artificial pumpkins and wood or wicker items.

My favorite metal items to decorate with are wall planters in iron. These can be easily changed with paint, ribbon, burlap, twine, etc.

Fill with live or artificial mums, fall foliage, pine cones, sunflowers and your favorite things. Hang them indoors or out. Metal wall art and containers also serve as pretty additions to autumn arrangements.
